Certarus and Toyota Pioneer First Hydrogen-Fueled Process Heat at Manufacturing Site
Certarus Ltd. (Certarus), in collaboration with Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) and Toyota Tsusho Canada Inc. (TTCI), is proud to have successfully completed a first-of-its-kind hydrogen blending project at TMMC’s manufacturing site in Woodstock, Ontario.
This groundbreaking initiative blended hydrogen with natural gas using Certarus’ proprietary Pressure Reduction System (PRS), which features dynamic blending capabilities. The resulting mixture was fed into a boiler used for process heat at the TMMC Woodstock plant.
While Toyota is a global leader in hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles, this project marked the first time hydrogen has been used to fuel manufacturing equipment at a Toyota facility worldwide.
Over the course of the week-long test:
· Hydrogen concentrations ranged from 5% to 20%
· Boiler operation was tested from 0% to 100% load
· Emissions data was collected to track reductions in CO₂ and other outputs
Certarus’ team led the system design, hydrogen delivery, regulatory approvals, and safe site integration. TMMC’s facilities team modified boiler infrastructure, managed testing and safety, and TTCI coordinated and financed the initiative.
This project represents an exciting step toward decarbonizing industrial heat and exploring scalable hydrogen applications in manufacturing.
